Sleepless in Azpeitia, Loyola

Somewhere between day 2 and 3.  The monks must be doing their 3am chanting somewhere.  Anticipation makes it difficult for me to sleep.  Still learning about “letting go, and letting God!”

               GOD-Y or GAUDY or GAUDI??

Sometimes the contradiction of Jesus and his life’s message, and the images that have come to represent him and so many saints, is difficult to reconcile!

This part of the church of San Sebastián, the church where Ignatius was baptized (font, bottom pic) was discovered following a fire (I believe).  It was covered at some point, when the gold and ornate alters were a must. For show? For God?  The family of Ignatius is buried under the main alter below.

This is the baptismal font where Ignatius was baptized.

It is also the site that Pope Paul XXIII visited, paused and prayed, right before being elected pope.  He truly transformed & modernized the church. I finally could understand the Mass (about 4th grade), since it was no longer recited in Latin.  Let’s hope Pope Francis, a Jesuit, can do the same for the church today.

Now I must get ready for our 22Km (15 mile) walk!

                               Jeez Louise!
