November 8, Rabat
Word of the day: Fortified: strengthened and secure Rabat: Rabat (Arabic: الرباط, transliterated ar-Rabāṭ or ar-Ribāṭ, literally "Fortified Place”
Rabat was founded in the 12th century by Almohads. The city steadily grew but went into an extended period of decline following the collapse of the Almohads. In the 17th century Rabat became a haven for Barbary pirates. The French established a protectorate over Morocco in 1912 and made Rabat its administrative center. Morocco achieved independence in 1955 and Rabat became its capital.
We spent yesterday exploring Rabat, the capital of Morocco 🇲🇦 and a lovely city!
A cart in the MedinaThe lovely open ceiling with all the stalls
Heading to the market/Medina
We visited Chellah, a citadel on the outskirts of Rabat
Chellah or Shalla, is a medieval fortified Muslim necropolis and ancient archeological site in Rabat, Morocco, located on the south side of the Bou Regreg estuary. The earliest evidence of the site's occupation suggests that the Phoenicians established a trading emporium here in the first millennium BC.
We had a great guide. The gardens were closed.
So he took us on a walk around the citedel.
The gardens include Roman ruins and ancient tombs!
Eileen in front of Mohammed V skyscraper going up
Stork nests, Dr Seuss/ish
It was like walking the trails of the Camino. And we met two gals from Haiti! Just like the Camino
And the guide gave us all morning glories for our hair
A huge fortress, 1st millennium BC
So old, so much history, if these walls could talk!
