January 16, witness

 Word of the day:  Witness.

Bearing witness to the joy of 8 year birthday 🥳

Witness in Greek is martys Martyr.   Interesting that the first definition that was presented when I looked it up was : “a person who sees an event, particularly a crime.  The “religious” definition is:  In the Bible, a witness is someone who sees something amazing or important. If this person begins to share what they've seen, we call this “bearing witness.” It's a simple word, but being a witness carries a lot of responsibility!24 nov 2019

Today is MLK day and I plan to attend the March.  Interesting how life is now divided for me pre and post Covid.  It will be my first March in several years, as I missed some while building the house. Martin Luther King was a witness to both definitions.  He saw the crimes being committed against people of color, and he “bore witness” to the truth.  It eventually cost him his life. But he had “a dream” that he shared with the world

Our country killed black men in the past through sanctioned activities such as slavery and lynchings. Today, the Mullins continue through official government organizations called police and sheriff departments.  Just last week, another black man, Keenan Anderson, a 31 year old school teacher was tazed to death by the LA police. Crazy, when you Google ‘black man shot by police”, how many names we have never heard “ bear witness” to the violence all around us.

And when a 6 year old can shoot a teacher, and once again; all we can offer is “our thoughts and prayers”; I know we are in a dark place in this country and going nowhere fast.   So today, I pray for the end to the violence.  In this country, in Ukraine, in the South and Central American countries, and for all the warring in so many African countries.   We need peace. And as Pope Paul VI said, “If you want peace, work for justice

Our grandson Julian shares a birthday with MLK.          Here are some pictures of his festivities over the years. We are bearing witness to the amazing lives of our grandchildren.  And I want a better world for them!
